Every Thanksgiving weekend in BC, thousands of homes run the same unplanned experiment: fifteen people, one turkey, and a floor plan that was never designed for any of it. If you are hosting this long weekend, pay attention to what happens. Your house is giving you free design feedback.

Watch the Sightline From the Kitchen

The cook is the person who spends the most time working and the least time visiting. A good floor plan lets whoever is at the stove or sink see into the dining and living areas, so they stay part of the party instead of disappearing behind a wall. If you spent Saturday shouting through a doorway, that is a sightline problem, and it is solvable with a wider opening, a pass-through, or a reworked kitchen edge.

Notice Where Guests Gather

Guests will always cluster where the food and the warmth are. If everyone ends up wedged into the kitchen while the living room sits empty, the plan is sending a signal. Often the cause is a kitchen that has no natural place to perch, or a living area that feels like a separate trip. An island with seating on the guest side, or a clear, wide connection between the two spaces, usually pulls people back into the whole house.

Count the Pinch Points

Take note of every moment someone had to squeeze past someone else: the hallway between kitchen and dining room, the corner near the fridge, the spot where the dishwasher door blocks the path. These pinch points rarely bother you on a normal Tuesday, but they become obvious with a crowd. They are also the cheapest problems to fix on paper before any construction starts.

Make Notes Now, Not Next Spring

By Tuesday the memory fades and the house goes back to feeling fine. Jot down three things on your phone before the dishes are even done: where you felt cramped, where people lingered, and what you wished the house could do. That list is a better design brief than most homeowners bring to a first meeting.

If the weekend left you with a list, we would be glad to look at it with you. A short conversation about your layout, your lot and your budget can show you whether the fix is a small adjustment or a bigger rethink.
