Heavy snow on the single family home’s roof can cause problems.

In West coast that doesn’t snow regularly the condition could be unexpected. Like recent weather caught every on by surprise.  We had over a week of snow followed by freezing condition which didn’t allow the snow on the roofs to melt and compiled for days.

Then with another wave of wet snow which usually is heavier than dry snow pilled over top of previous pile. With a bit of rain the lower layer start melting and forcing all the piles to the edge of the roof causing extra weight that most of the roofs are not built for.

So, it’s a wise idea to hire a professional to remove the snow from your roof before any further damage accrue.

Remember, some insurance companies do not cover the snow built up and you don’t want to end-up evacuating your house on this holiday season due to the roof damage!!!!

Dealing with Cold weather

Dealing with Cold weather could be difficult for us in west coast.

It’s cold out there these days which effects everybody’s life and work performance. Our homes that shelter us are taking the worst of it. It might not be a bad idea to inspect around the windows once in while to see if there is any ice-jam in any corners set.

If there is, it’s a sign of a draft trying to release from inside causing frost at the exit point. It’s suggested to cover the windows with a plastic wrap for time being to avoid any ice jam that may result a more expensive damage to your house.

Since we don’t have many truly cold winters here on the west coast, our homes are not as well prepared for the cold as they are in other parts of Canada. On the other hand, the cold weather in west coast is wet cold versus dry cold in other parts.
This could be more damaging to integrity of wood structure as the moisture inside the wall cavity will freeze and affect the property of wood structure.

So, it’s a wise idea to ask a home inspector to inspect your house in cold conditions to avoid further damage.
Conventionally, people hire a home inspector when they buy a home, but you can hire one for as low as $350.

This can give you piece of mind knowing that your home is performing it’s best and won’t deliver a huge bill coming summer.
